Science & Research for Chiropractic

The human body is designed to be self-regulating and self-healing. The part of the body which is responsible for the self-regulating and self-healing properties is the nervous system. The spinal column is designed to protect the vital connection between the nervous system and the body. Therefore, an optimal functioning spine and nervous system equals optimal health.

Today the research says it all. The following list of research is by no means complete. We will continue to add quality research to our archive – so be sure to check back regularly. If there is a health concern which you do not see listed below but would like to know if chiropractic can help you – please contact our office and we will be more than happy to discuss your particular situation.

  • ADD / ADHD

Studies have found that chiropractic care was 20-40% more effective than medication (and had no side effects)

  • Addiction

Chiropractic can help addicts properly adjust to their environment - allowing them to deal with the painful process of withdrawal.

  • Allergies

Children under chiropractic had less use of medications, including antibiotics, and suffered from less ear infections.

  • Autism

In one study, 50% of all autistic subjects under chiropractic care experienced reliable behavioral improvements, as recorded by independent observers.

  • Back Pain

“The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) recently made history when it concluded that spinal manipulative therapy is the most effective and cost-effective treatment for acute low back pain.

  • Bedwetting

In one study, 25% of the chiropractic treatment-group children had 50% or more reduction in the wet night frequency from baseline to post-treatment while none among the control group had such reduction.

  • Blood Pressure

Dr. Laurie Tassell concludes from a pilot study: “With gentle chiropractic adjustment to the upper neck, blood pressure can be lowered, with good results measured for older patients in particular.”

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

One study concluded that This study showed that chiropractic was as effective as medical treatment in reducing symptoms of CTS.

  • Colic

In a study of over 300 infants, 1/4 of these infants showed great improvement after the very first chiropractic adjustment. The remaining infants all showed improvement within 14 days.

  • Digestion

Analyzing over 1500 questionnaires, one study found 23% of patients reported improvement in, among other things, breathing easier, improved digestion, and improved circulation.

  • Ear Infection

In a study of children, it was found that osteopathic manipulations may prevent or decrease surgical intervention or antibiotic overuse with children with AOM (i.e. middle ear infection).

  • Fibromyalgia

Cause and treatment of fibromyalgia is not well understood in any medical field. However, there is anecdotal and many case studies that suggest results from chiropractic interventions appear favourable.

  • Headaches

A case series found the average frequency of migraine episodes was reduced by 90% and length of each headache reduced by 38%. Medication use dropped 94%.

  • Disc Herniation

In a 27-patient study, post-care MRIs revealed that 63% of the patients had a reduced or completely resorbed disc herniation. 78% of the patients were able to return to work in their pre-disability occupations.

  • Immunity

This is one of the most exciting areas of chiropractic. More and more research is pointing to an immune system enhancement effect of the spinal adjustment.

  • Infertility

Numerous case studies show chiropractic adjustments successfully resulting in conception in women and couples who had been previously failed by traditional medical interventions.

  • Neck Pain

In a study of 77 patients, in 3 treatment groups, Spinal care was the only intervention to achieve a statistically significant improvement.

  • PMS

A clinical study of 11 women with a history of PMS symptoms, subjects reported improvement in all ten symptom categories with the greatest improvement of symptoms relating to variations in sexual drive (70.7%), social impairment (64.5%), and mood swings (60.8%).

The average overall symptom improvement was 44.2%.

  • Pregnancy

Adjustments keep the segments of the pregnant woman’s structure moving freely and normally. It permits a constant free flow of all body fluids and a normal venous supply to control function.

The return of the mother to pre-partum health also is expedited by adjustments.

  • Sciatica

Many medical doctors prescribe bed rest for sciatica although there is little objective data to support its ineffectiveness. Case studies suggest that chiropractic treatment can decrease pain and lead to increased capacity.

  • Subluxation

A subluxation is when one or more vertebrae move slightly out of alignment causing pressure or irritation to the spinal nerves.

Once the nervous system has been impaired via a subluxation, the overall health and well-being of the person is reduced. Chiropractic is able to remove subluxation.

  • Wellness

Asymptomatic or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels (a regenerative enzyme) than patients with active disease and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values.

  • Whiplash

In an analysis of 57 whiplash sufferers, subluxation-based chiropractic care showed significant increases in cervical flexion and extension, muscle strength, and a decrease in the neck pain disability index.

Each month, Dr. Glen will take an in-depth look at one of the above conditions. For more detail, case studies, literature reviews, and Dr. Glen’s own take on how chiropractic can help all of the above conditions. Check out the blog here!

Patient Testimonials

Your reviews are much appreciated! Please consider leaving us a review if you have appreciated our hard work.

My baby had neck stress from labour & delivery and had sudden painful outbursts (gassiness). Chiropractic has made her a happier baby. She is much more calm and relaxed, almost sleeping through the night. Dr. Glen is gentle and great with kids.Cassie
Dr. Glen’s chiro care should be a requirement for prevention of conditions. Getting regular adjustments has made a world of difference. First the headaches went away, then my back has gotten much better and I continue with treatments to prevent these headaches and pain. It feels better to have an adjustment rather than to take pain medication to cover the symptom but never address the cause. You can gain better results with adjustments.Tina T
